What does the name Tximist mean?
Tximist means “lightning” in Basque. The Foundation and the Tournament are named after Juan Carlos Samaniego ‘Tximist’, a source of inspiration and a symbol of strength and energy for many sportsmen and women who had the good fortune to meet him.
Juan Carlos Samaniego was nicknamed ‘Tximist’ because of a mountain expedition he made to Everest. The Tximist expedition was a Basque mountaineering expedition that attempted to climb Everest in 1974. The expedition failed to reach the summit. It was called the Tximist Expedition because it was financed by the company Cegasa, led by Juan Celaya, and Tximist was the ‘first name’, as the propaganda said. It was in 1974 and Ángel Rosen and Felipe Uriarte had to turn back 300 metres from the summit. There and then, without returning home, permission was requested for a new attempt, this time financed by financial institutions and the Basque public administration. Six years later, in a new attempt, they reached the summit.
All these values inspire the foundation today:
Strength and Determination: despite not achieving the summit on the first attempt, it shows the strength and determination to pursue ambitious goals.
Resilience: The fact that the expedition was initially unsuccessful, but went on to reach the summit on a subsequent attempt, reflects resilience in the face of challenges and the ability to learn and improve.
Collaboration: The importance of collaboration and joint support in achieving meaningful goals.
Overcoming Obstacles: The expedition faced difficulties, but the fact that they managed to overcome obstacles and reach the summit highlights the spirit of overcoming.
Inspiration: ‘Tximist’ became a symbol of inspiration for the athletes. This suggests the importance of inspiring through personal actions and achievements.
